LESSON PLAN
The plan for a single lesson for a period is known as a lesson plan.
A lesson plan is a plan of action. It gives an outline of the lesson to be taught.
It indicates all the objectives to be realised by teaching a lesson, the learning experiences to be provided and the evaluation procedure to be adopted.
Lesson planning involves defining the objectives, selecting and arranging the subject matter and determining the method and procedure.

Need for lesson planning
The specific needs for planning a lesson are listed below:
To give a definite direction to the teacher for each day's work.
To make the teacher mastery in content and to enable him to develop confidence.
To plan for maintaining links between different lessons for teaching a particular unit and between the various learning materials in the same lesson.
To specify well defined goals to be realised in the course of the lesson.
To prevent waste of time due to lack of pre-planning
To decide upon appropriate learning activities and use of instructional materials
To decide upon procedures for gathering feedback and for providing reinforcement.
To anticipate probable difficulties and to plan remedial measures.
To plan evaluation procedures both formative and summative
Principles of lesson planning
A lesson plan should be related to the previous lessons.
The materials of instruction or subject matter should be well selected, well analysed into facts,concepts, principles, etc. and systematically organised.
Instructional objectives and its specifications should be clearly stated.
The plan should indicate the learning experience to be provided.
Instructional aids and mediators have to be specified and linked with the learning experiences.
It should indicate teaching techniques to be used by the teacher.
A good lesson plan should propose proper evaluation strategies to be used at each stage and at the end of the lesson.
Assignments and other activities for enriching the lesson should be clearly indicated.
It should budget the time devoted to different phases of the lesson.
How to plan a lesson?
Before writing a lesson plan the teacher has to decide upon all the relevant details of the various aspects to be taken care of.
This planning should consider the details discussed below.
1. Defining the scope of the lesson
In the initial stage of planning a lesson, the teacher should specify the date, duration of the class, standard, subject to be taught etc.
2. Selection of the curriculum material for the class
Curriculum material should be appropriate for the lesson to be completed within the time prescribed in the timetable.
3. Identification of major aspects to be covered.
Teacher must collect a clear picture of the topic in advance.
4. Detailed content analysis
Teachers should break down the content on the basis of name, year, place, terms, facts, concepts etc.
4. Formulation of major objectives
Based on the results of the content analysts, the teacher should set the instructional objectives.
5. Formulation of specific objectives
After instructional objectives, the teacher should fix the specific outcomes in terms of behavioural changes. (Observable and measurable behavior)
7. Deciding upon the learning activities and the resulting experiences and selection of
leaming aids
The learning aids to be used also should be decided in advance by the teacher. It will help in transacting the subject matter in an effective way through the learning activities provided.
8. Listing the pre-requisites
The teacher should identify all the relevant knowledge, skill, etc, which the learner has already acquired and which could be profitably linked with the new knowledge that is to be presented.
9. A sound programme of evaluation
How formative and summative evaluation will be conducted in the course of the lesson must clearly planned
10. Plan for a fruitful review
Overall consolidation of the class must be planned in advance.
